How is the pee of babies and what are the related warning signs

We parents like it, or at least it makes us feel better, or be calmer, to control the different processes of our children. There are more obsessive ones, who watch every few hours they eat, how many hours they sleep, the poops they make, the peeps they make, what color and they write everything down in a notebook and they have to simply comfort themselves knowing that what their child is doing is normal, without needing to know exactly how often he does it.

In any case, whether you are from one or others, the ideal is to know what is the reference in which you should look, that is, what is considered normal. For this we will explain below how is the baby pee (urine) and what are the warning signs that should make us think that there could be a problem.

How often they urinate

When explaining how often a baby urinates the data is a bit variable. There are babies who can urinate every one to three hours, that is, get to do more than 10 peeps a day, and there are others who do it four to six times a day, being the two perfectly normal babies. Now, when a child is sick, if he has a fever, or if we are in a hot season, he can produce up to half of the urine, being logical and normal.

It is different that suddenly the baby begins to urinate much more than normal (in frequency normally), since it could explain some infectious problem, or that suddenly urinate much less, which could be due to a lack of milk intake ( or of water if it is older). It could also be a sign of infection discomfort at the time of urination, expressed with crying or complaints (urinating should not hurt).

Urine color

The normal color is yellow, which in well fed babies it is usually clear. Some make the pee darker, which indicates that urine is more concentrated because there is less fluid ingested. Come on, if it is quite dark the baby could be drinking few liquids.

Sometimes we might find a pink spot in the diaper that usually scares because it seems to indicate the presence of blood in the urine. Normally it is also due to the concentration of urine, higher than usual (they are urate crystals, relatively common in the first days after birth).

If the child gets wet at least four diapers a day, do not worry about that spot. If the rosé is still persistently seen in several diapers then it would be necessary to discuss it with the pediatrician, in case it was necessary to analyze the urine for any alteration.

What if there was real blood?

If there is real blood in the urine or if we see a blood stain on the diaper we should see a doctor. First to verify that diaper blood certainly comes from urine and second to know why there is blood. The most common is that it is a urine infection, which in babies should be treated as soon as possible because of the risk of infection and / or kidney injury (pyelonephritis) precisely when they are maturing.
