Consuming caffeine during pregnancy would increase the likelihood of children being overweight

A new study has found one more reason to take care of how much we take, because it was found that consuming caffeine during pregnancy could increase the chances that your children are overweight.

Changing habits in pregnancy

When we discover that we are pregnant, we must take the necessary measures to take care of ourselves, which includes many times changes in our lifestyle, from the activities we do to the food we carry.

One of the recommendations given to us during pregnancy is precisely the moderate or limit caffeine intake that we have on a daily basis, because as I said at the beginning, several studies have linked it to an increased risk of abortion.

The study

Published in the British Medical Journal, this new study conducted in Norway, analyzed the relationship between caffeine consumption during pregnancy, with the development and overweight of children.

With a duration of six years, conducted between 2002 and 2008, the study was attended by more than 50,000 women and their children, and analyzed a record of average caffeine consumption during pregnancy.

Of the total of participating mothers, 46% of them had a low caffeine consumption during pregnancy, 44% had a moderate or normal consumption, while 10% had a high or too high consumption.

Following up on the growth of children from the birth of some to 8 years of others, it was found that those babies whose mothers had consumed more than 200 milligrams of caffeine a day had a higher weight and body mass index during childhood.

It was also found that any amount of caffeine in pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of being overweight at 3 and 5 years of age, while this was presented persistently at 8 years in the children of those who had a very high consumption of caffeine.

Similarly, Caffeine consumption, regardless of the amount, was related to a higher body mass index during childhood. In addition, high caffeine consumption was also related to a faster weight gain from the first years of life to 8 years

What if I drink coffee occasionally?

Like many studies, the results show only one possibility, so it does not mean that doing or not doing certain things means that diseases or consequences will happen in a mandatory way.

But nevertheless, yes it is important to take certain care. In the case of caffeine consumption, the recommendation is to limit your consumption to one cup of coffee per day, although remember that there are other drinks and foods that contain caffeine, such as teas or chocolate.

While the ideal is avoid caffeine consumption during pregnancy to prevent the occurrence of certain complications, you can be calm and enjoy a cup of coffee from time to time, as long as you do not consume more than recommended.
