Security measures on balconies and terraces for children

If you live in an apartment, you will surely have a terrace or a balcony, this is one of the places where the child finds fun, plays with his toys, is fascinated by plants and there is an element that attracts him a lot, the earth of the pots.

The balcony or terrace is part of the house and as such, it may be accessible to the child but of course, with appropriate security measures. Spring will begin soon and with it the good weather, the child enjoys being on the terrace, gives the sun, the air, discovers the world of plants, in short it is a different environment from inside the house that attracts for that reason, for being different.

We must have a series of precautions regarding the balcony or terrace that we must take into account so that the child does not suffer any setback, if we like plants and we have some, we must make sure that these are not toxic or poisonous. Some plants are very beautiful but they have those possible risks, so when we buy one, we must inform ourselves well about it. There are plants that produce small berries, these should be avoided at all costs, since they are a temptation for children. The showy ones with beautiful flowers are so fragile that the child could break them, therefore, when choosing some plants to decorate our terrace or balcony it would be convenient to choose plants that were resistant and beautiful, such as the dozens. Above all we must avoid cacti, many are poisonous and also the skewers they have could hurt the little one.

We should never arrange any pot near the railing, much less a piece of furniture that allows it to climb on it. As for the land, there are children that attract them and even eat it, so it is preferable not to have any plants and wait for the child to grow to have them.

Special attention should be given to the design of the terrace or balcony with respect to the railing and the height of it, many children are fond of climbing where they can put their little feet, and the design of the railing can be a temptation, that's why the use of appropriate protective meshes is recommended.

The distance between the balusters of the railing must be so narrow that it does not fit the child's head, there is a law that indicates that it must be less than 12 cm. But the constructions do not always meet all the requirements, so make sure that there is no possibility that your child can put his head between them, it is very easy to put it, but they have a harder time taking it out and it could be a cause of drowning.

When we are inside the house, we must not forget as a precaution, to have a small security lock that prevents access to the balcony to our little one, since it is one more way to prevent any possible danger and that does not access the terrace without us Let us keep track and be present with him.
