The transplantation of the cells of the umbilical cord of one brother has been carried out successfully to save the other. The miracle has happened.
The transplant had been performed on January 23 at the Virgen del Rocío hospital in Seville, and has allowed Andrés to cure his disease, a beta thalassemia major, the most severe form of genetic anemia. Andrés suffered an anomaly of hemoglobin genes, responsible for transporting oxygen. This serious illness forced him to receive blood transfusions every fifteen days to stay alive.
The child already goes to the hospital only for routine visits and no longer needs the blood transfusions that were performed. Today it is considered to be cured since at least a month and a half ago he has not needed transfusions again.
His brother was selected among other embryos because he could be a compatible donor as well as being free of the disease. The great hope of this family was that, thanks to the transplantation of cells of his cord, the older brother had a chance of healing. They did not doubt it and the miracle has happened.
