"Academy of specialists": discover the skills that make children with autism unique

We already announced it yesterday: today is the World Autism Awareness Day, and to celebrate it I have chosen this beautiful animated short film that explains what the End of Course Day is like in the “Academy of Specialists”. The protagonists are Max and all his friends, each of them specialist in things that many of us would find difficult to do.

Perfectly imitate others, count ALL the red and white cars seen in one day, classify people with numbers and colors (and without making mistakes), learn songs after having heard them only once, know the calendar days by heart, make huge puzzles by turning the pieces upside down so as not to get confused ... All of them with skills that make these children unique with autism, and provoke the pride of their parents, who also see how your children supply problems with imagination and intelligence; and the latter is not always well understood.

Thanks to these super powers, children who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) feel safe and protected. They are skills that allow them to defend themselves from everyday chaos and orient themselves in a society with too much information

The video came out in 2012 as a result of the collaboration between the Orange Foundation that has produced it, and the cartoonist Miguel Gallardo (who has done it). The latter is the father of a daughter with autism, and the main objective in doing this work has been the parents of people with ASD. It took a year for the team to finish this work, and they had already been together performing "The Journey of Mary" (awarded at several film festivals).

The look towards the autism that the short gives us helps us understand, and enriches us at the same timeThat is why we must be open to know more about ASD.

ASD is not a disease, but a different form of development. In addition to understanding these people, we must understand the need to find themselves in quiet environments where everything is in logical order, without providing too many stimuli at once. They are people see and feel the world differently than oursFor others it is as easy as making them feel loved.
