Children of mothers with iodine deficiency in pregnancy have worse cognitive performance

The iodine supplement during pregnancy was added a few years ago the iodine, which is recommended during pregnancy and then during the months of breastfeeding. A few months ago we explained in Babies and more that iodine in children's diet was very important, because the deficit affects psychomotor and intellectual development. Now it has been seen that Children are affected by iodine deficiencies even from pregnancy.

A study carried out in Australia shows that women with a slight iodine deficit are more at risk of having children with grammar, reading and spelling words.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers performed several tests on children 9 years old, children of women who had had a mild iodine deficiency during pregnancy. The results showed differences between 6 and 10 percent less than the children of women with normal iodine values. To be more specific, the children of women with mild iodine deficiency (we talk about a minimal deficit, imagine if it is moderate or severe) obtained 371 points in the test to spell words and 377 points in the test grammar test National Education The children of mothers without deficit scored 412 and 408 points, respectively.

Our body needs iodine to produce thyroid hormones, but in pregnant women and children it acquires a fundamental role as it is intimately linked to the baby's brain development.

So that it is not lacking, the consumption of milk, fish, vegetables and iodized table salt is recommended. In case of having to supplement, it is recommended, at least in the United States, that pregnant women take 220 mcg / day and that women who breastfeed take 290 mcg / day. In Spain the recommendations are similar, between 200 and 300 mcg per day.

I know that it is a mineral that is not being paid much attention, because the supplementation with it is recent and because it was considered that with iodized salt the population was quite covered, however we are in a country where many children and adults have deficits and many children could have a better overall development if they had better iodine levels and if their mothers, during pregnancy, had taken more iodine, either through food, or through a supplement.
